Balance Awareness Week September 15-21, 2024: Why Balance Matters For Your Fitness Journey
"Vestibular disorders often do not have visible symptoms, but they can deeply affect a person's quality of life, impacting their balance, daily activities, and overall well-being." - Dr. Michael Cohen
Understanding Balance
Vestibular rehabilitation is a branch of physical therapy that treats vertigo, dizziness and imbalance. As a vestibular physical therapist, I want to shed light on an often-overlooked aspect of fitness: balance. Balance Awareness Week is the perfect opportunity to discuss the critical role balance plays in your overall health and how you can improve it.
Balance isn't just about standing still without wobbling. There are three primary body systems involved in maintaining balance.
1. Vestibular System: Located in the inner ear, this system detects changes in head position and movement. It plays a critical role in maintaining balance and coordinating movement by sending signals to the brain about the body's position in space.
2. Visual System: The eyes provide visual input to the brain about the environment, helping to maintain balance by allowing the body to adjust its position based on what is seen.
3. Proprioceptive System: This system includes the muscles, joints, and skin, providing sensory feedback to the brain about body position and movement, allowing for adjustments to maintain balance and coordination.
When these systems work together, they allow you to maintain stability and move confidently, which is important to enjoy an active lifestyle.
The Impact of Poor Balance & How to Improve It
Many people aren't aware of how much their balance affects daily activities until something goes wrong. Poor balance can lead to falls and reduced mobility, particularly as we age. In a fitness setting, balance issues can cause injuries and slow progress towards your goals. The good news is that balance can be improved with specific exercises and lifestyle adjustments. Here are some tips:
1. Incorporate Balance Exercises: Simple exercises like standing on one leg, heel-to-toe walking, or using a balance board can significantly improve your stability.
2. Strengthen Your Core: A strong core is essential for good balance. Planks, bridges, and other core exercises should be a regular part of your workout routine.
3. Practice Mind-Body Activities: Yoga, Pilates, and tai chi are excellent for feeling “grounded” while also improving flexibility and mental focus.
4. Stay Active: Regular physical activity keeps your muscles and joints in good condition, which is crucial for maintaining balance.
