The body uses three systems for balance: visual, somatosensory and vestibular. Vestibular rehabilitation is a branch of physical therapy that treats vertigo, dizziness and imbalance. Located deep in the inner ear, the vestibular system informs the brain about head position and movement direction, prompting muscle activation for balance. This system enhances gaze stability and teaches the eyes, brain and body to adapt, reducing symptoms and enhancing balance.
BPPV, common in those ages 40+, involves calcium carbonate crystals in the inner ear detaching and causing vertigo. It is induced by gravity-related movements (rolling or getting in and out of bed, bending over and tilting back at the dentist) and triggers rapid, involuntary eye movements, lasting seconds to a minute. A proper diagnosis requires specific positional tests for each ear canal, performed by specialists like vestibular rehab therapists or ENT physicians. While BPPV is benign and treatable with repositioning maneuvers, self-administered maneuvers learned on YouTube, are discouraged without a proper evaluation. Seek assistance from professionals, and if you suspect BPPV, consider reaching out to Balance Solutions Rehab for guidance.
Vestibular hypofunction is caused by viral or bacterial inner ear infections from an upper respiratory or gastrointestinal illness up to 3 weeks prior to the onset of symptoms. It leads to sudden severe vertigo, nausea, vomiting and difficulty walking. Inflammation of the vestibular nerve (vestibular neuritis) or the entire vestibular/hearing organ (labyrinthitis) causes misinformation to the brain. Vertigo and possibly ear pressure, clogging, or ringing may occur. For the first 1-2 days when the symptoms are most severe, a person feels better closing their eyes and lying still. Most people fully recover in 1-2 weeks. Residual dizziness and imbalance can persist, alleviated by vestibular rehab exercises. For assistance with vestibular hypofunction, consider reaching out to Balance Solutions Rehab.
Migraine IS NOT JUST A HEADACHE. It is a complex, chronic neurologic disorder affecting 15% of the population, with women three times more likely to be affected. It's the second leading cause of disability behind back pain. A migraine attack causes changes in the brain, triggering inflammatory responses, release of hormones, which causes more inflammation. This affects the different regions that control sensory, motor, cognitive, emotional and autonomic function. Migraine attacks, lasting 5 minutes to 72 hours, present with a throbbing headache, nausea, vomiting, and aura (dizziness, tingling of the face/extremities, visual changes like flashing/waving lights or zig zags lines, light, sound and smell sensitivity).
Vestibular migraine, CAN OCCUR WITHOUT HEADACHE, causing symptoms like vertigo, dizziness, imbalance, motion sensitivity, visual vertigo, nausea, headache, eye strain, sensitivity to light, sound, difficulty concentrating and ear ringing. Balance Solutions Rehab offers assistance in managing these symptoms through education, exercises and tools. Reach out for a free discovery call or to schedule an appointment.
